How often should a fire alarm be serviced?

A plain-English guide to BS 5839-1:2025 servicing requirements for commercial fire alarm systems.

The short answer

BS 5839-1:2025 recommends professional servicing at least every six months for most commercial fire alarm systems, alongside weekly user tests carried out on-site by the Responsible Person.

Who is the “Responsible Person”?

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the Responsible Person is whoever has control of a building — typically the employer, building owner, or managing agent. They’re legally accountable for fire safety, including making sure the alarm system is maintained.

What happens at a six-monthly service?

What about the weekly test?

Separately from the professional service, BS 5839-1 recommends the Responsible Person test one call point weekly (a different one each week, on rotation) to confirm the system is signalling correctly. This is quick, doesn’t require an engineer, and is normally logged in the same site logbook.

What if my system is bigger or higher-risk?

Larger, more complex, or higher-risk systems may warrant more frequent professional visits than the six-month minimum — this is normally assessed as part of your fire risk assessment, not a fixed rule.
